Female Empowerment and Income Opportunities

Before we are able to strengthen the position of women in the Gomboro community we must first improve their economic autonomy. We have begun to help women reduce structural inequality by providing literacy classes and organizing craft courses.

Eigenes Einkommen eröffnet Frauen neue Handlungsspielräume und sichert Mitspracherecht in Familie und Gemeinde.

For example, one class teaches women how to produce soap for regional markets. Not only do we offer a wide range of vocational skills but in participating, women learn about the economic entrepreneurship. They shop for the materials, learn how to produce a high quality product, calculate the prices, and eventually sell their produce. This self-organized activity promotes independence and boost self-confidence.

Women are no longer perceived in their reproductive role but slowly they are finding ways to open up and expand. In this way they can also enforce changes within their own families more easily and gain a greater say in municipal decisions for the community as a whole.
